When there’s an event you’ve been dreaming about attending, it’s tempting to grab the tickets the moment they go on sale and figure out the rest later.
We recommend doing the opposite.
Because when you’re traveling for a major event—whether it’s a sporting event, concert, festival, cultural event or something you’ve been waiting years to experience—the event ticket is only one piece of the trip.
The Event Can Change the Entire Destination
Major events can have a significant impact on how a destination operates.
Hotels may have minimum-stay requirements. Some properties may require specific booking windows or packages. Rates can change dramatically, and availability can disappear much faster than it would during a typical travel period.
And those requirements aren’t always the same if you’re booking independently versus working through a travel partner or event package. That’s why we recommend looking at the entire trip before purchasing the ticket.
You want to know where you’re going to stay, how you’re going to get there, how you’ll move around once you’re there and what additional requirements may come into play.
There Can Be A Lot Happening Behind the Scenes
The things you don’t know about can sometimes be the things that create the biggest headaches.
Depending on the event and destination, you may encounter:
- Additional security checkpoints
- Restricted access to certain areas
- Special permits or credentials
- Road closures and transportation restrictions
- Designated transportation zones
- Limited access to certain hotels or venues
- Changes to public transportation
- Minimum-stay requirements
- Event-specific booking policies
- Increased demand for private transportation and guides
None of this necessarily means you shouldn’t go. It just means you need to know what you’re getting into before you build the rest of your trip around that ticket.

If You're Going, Stay a Little Longer
This is one of my favorite parts of planning event travel.
If you’re flying across the country—or halfway around the world—for an event, the event doesn’t have to be the only reason you’re there.
Maybe you’ve always wanted to visit the city where the event is taking place. Maybe there’s a nearby destination you’ve been curious about. Maybe you want a few days before the event to settle in, explore and enjoy the destination without an itinerary built entirely around the main event.
The event may be what gets you there. It doesn’t have to be the only thing you experience.
That’s where thoughtful trip planning can really change the experience. Instead of flying in, attending the event and flying home, we can look at the bigger picture and build a trip that feels like your trip—not simply an event you traveled to attend.
